4 Department of Semiconductor Detectors Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 2010 Present Activities Construction of the Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) –Double sided silicon sensors: design and negotiation with companies –Electrical characterization –Module assembly, beam tests, gamma-Irradiation R&D for CMS Tracker Upgrade: CEC collaboration –New sensor design: strixel sensors –New methods of connecting readout chip to sensor –Neutron irradiation at Vienna nuclear reactor –Development of radiation-hard silicon sensors with Austrian semiconductor company Silicon Detectors for an International Linear Collider experiment –SiLC collaboration: Sensor Design, electrical characterization, testbeams –Associated member of EUDET, Full member of AIDA (start 2011) 4

5 Department of Semiconductor Detectors Expertise: Sensor Design Sensor design –Design is programmed and automatically drawn –Self-programmed software framework Collaboration with detector producers –Hamamatsu, Micron, ITE Warsaw Microscopic and spectroscopic analysis to verify actual processed sensor –Collaboration with Center for Electron Microscopy at TU Vienna Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 20105

6 Department of Semiconductor Detectors Expertise: Electrical Characterisation Available Setups: Global IV, CV measurements Fully automatic strip-by-strip measurements performed by motorized XYZ-table Cold chuck to test at different temperatures Goals are: Quality assurance for mass production (e.g. CMS, soon Belle II) Report back to producer Select good sensors for module production Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 20106

8 Department of Semiconductor Detectors Expertise: Beam Tests Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 2010 Regular beam tests to test sensors and modules Usually at CERNs SPS secondary beam lines In cooperation with HEPHY electronics group and international colleagues (SiLC, EUDET) Different main goals: 2008: resolution studies of sensors with different layout (ILC) 2009: performance of double metal layers for routing purpose (CMS) 2010: performance of double sided sensors with different p-stop patterns (Belle II) 8

9 Department of Semiconductor Detectors New Expertise: Neutron-Irradiation Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 2010 Irradiation of silicon sensors at TRIGA Mark II nuclear reactor at ATI Vienna (“Atominstitut der TU Wien”) Easy access High neutron flux Test of silicon sensors: For CMS upgrade R&D n- vs. p-type substrate Float zone vs. mCz vs. Epitaxial material First in-situ temperature measurement of nuclear reactor’s irradiation channels Necessary to know for the understanding of the annealing behavior in silicon sensors 9

15 Department of Semiconductor Detectors Thomas Bergauer21 Oct. 2010 Summary Department of semiconductor detectors is fully integrated in research projects: –CMS Tracker construction, R&D for upgrade –Belle II: silicon sensors, modules, beam tests –Silicon Sensors for ILC Close collaboration with electronics department since many developments are done together (e.g. module construction) Good sharing of manpower: –Permanent staff carry expertise –Students for diploma/master and PhD theses 15
