1 TYPES OF POETRY

2  the writer's attitude toward the material and/or readers. Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc. TONE

3  Tells a story  Is meant to be sung (usually)  Each stanza has four lines  Example: Gilligan’s Island Theme Song http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=cfR7qxtgCgY BALLAD

4  A long narrative poem telling of a hero’s deeds  The main character is larger than life and possess super human strength. EPIC

5 FREE VERSE  Poetry that doesn’t follow any set pattern.  The poet choses how many lines per stanza and how many stanzas.  The poet also chooses the beat and what forms of figurative language to use.

6  Tells a story  Ballads and Epics are narratives!!!  Robin Hood, King Arthur, Harry Potter, etc.. NARRATIVE

7  Lyric poem of moderate length  Often praises people, music, natural scenes, and abstract concepts  Can explore problems ODE

8  14 lines ONLY!  can have a stanza of eight lines and six lines  four lines per stanza and ending in 2 lines in the last stanza (couplet) SONNET
