Was a common disease that affected many people around the country Before Knew close to nothing about this disease and had so many questions to ask Grandfather has been dealing with this disease daily for the longest time Would be able to learn all types of information on Type II Diabetes Knowledge would apply to myself and others

6 What is it? A chronic disorder involving blood glucose and insulin In order for glucose to be used insulin must be present In body of someone with diabetes, pancreas produces little to no insulin

7 Types of Diabetes Diabetes Mellitus Type I Diabetes Type II Diabetes Gestational Diabetes

8 Type II Diabetes Body’s cells become unaffected by insulin Body does not properly use the insulin created by the pancreas Formally called adult-onset diabetes Can develop the disease at any time About 16 million people in the United States have diabetes mellitus; half do not even realize that they have diabetes

10 Other Causes and Risk Factors Impossible to “catch” from other people Obesity and lack of physical activity responsible for nearly 95% of diabetes cases High blood pressure More common in older people Men and women are at equal risk

11 What are the Symptoms? Can proceed for long period of time without symptoms occurring Develop more gradually than Type I’s and not as noticeable Indications: o Increased thirst for sweetened beverages o Increased urination o Increased appetite o Fatigue o Slow-healing infections o Dry and itchy skin o Numbness in hands or feet

12 Long-term Effects Damage kidney or heart, leading to heart attack or stroke Damage nerves and small blood vessels in eye In later years, can become an invalid 60 to 70% of diabetics have some degree of nerve system damage by the end of their lives Severe cases of diabetic neuropathy cause more than 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations

13 Diagnosis Mainly done over set of three blood tests Requires positive result of one test and confirmation by a second positive result on different day Blood test at routine check-up Eventually sent to hospital for further testing

14 How is the Disease Treated? Treatment has changed over time due to new technology Continue with doctors’ visits, dental examinations and eye examinations Daily foot inspections Keep up with current immunizations

15 Other Methods of Treatment Body must stay healthy Plan balanced meals and work on dietary control Regular physical activity Monitor blood glucose Medicines to cope with Type II Diabetes: mainly for circulatory issues Perform physical activity to lower blood glucose

16 Are there Methods of Prevention? New ways of prevention being introduced constantly Identify those at high risk and encourage them to lose weight and follow healthy diet Learn risk factors, become more physically active, manage stress in better ways Weight loss can prevent or delay 58% of pre-diabetes cases

17 Is it an Issue? Grown to become much more of an apparent issue in the U.S. More than 186,000 people younger than 20 years old have Diabetes In 1992, Diabetes cost the nation $92 billion Diabetes affects 90 to 95 percent of the 26 million Americans One of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States
