7 CULTURAL IDENTIFIERS Young, optimistic American society Excitement about westward expansion & economic prosperity Patriotic themes dominated American society Revolutionary Heroes idolized Expansion of public schools (most using Webster’s blue-backed speller) Nationalism ruled the era!

9 THE AMERICAN SYSTEM A plan to promote the nations economic growth. Consisted of 3 Parts (Henry Clay) 1.Impose a protective tariff (protect industry & raise $) 2.Re-charter the National Bank (to provide a national currency) 3.Make internal improvements (roads & canals to connect the nation)

10 THE MARSHALL COURT Supreme Court dominated by Federalist Chief Justice John Marshall His rulings increased the power of the federal government (ex. Marbury v. Madison) Believed that a strong central govt. best served the nations interests Upheld federal laws over states rights

11 MONROE DOCTRINE (1823) Monroe Administrations most significant foreign policy achievement Stipulated that: European powers were to stay out of the New World and end colonization in the west Promise by the US to not interfere in the affairs of Europe US would consider European interference as an act of aggression

12 FLORIDA PURCHASE TREATY Florida held by Spain during early 1800’s Becomes a haven for escaped slaves, outlaws & Seminoles Monroe & Andrew Jackson take military action in Florida Jackson leads a force of militia into Florida & drives out the Spanish Governor Spain is worried US would take Florida by force Adams-Onis Treaty (1819) – Spain gives up Florida & Oregon Territory to US US agrees to assume $5 million in Spanish debt & gives up claims to Texas
