3 Trust v Mistrust B-1 Key issue – develop trust for others; confidence in and trust for self Key relationship – maternal – quality of the mother/child relationship = basic glue that holds the SELF together Successful resolution = hope Unsuccessful = fear

4 Autonomy v Shame & Doubt 1-3
Key Issue – can I care for myself – centered around toilet training Key relationship – parent/child –When to assert? When to defer? Balance of reassurance-firmness/tolerance-justness Successful resolution =will power & autonomy – “I can do it!” Unsuccessful resolution = self doubt – lack of confidence in self

5 Initiative v Guilt 4-6 Key issue –Can I do things for others? Can I start things? A sense of the possible Key relationship – the family – punishment, ridicule, failure to allow initiative/efforts unsuccessful---balance acceptance and teaching Successful resolution = purpose Unsuccessful resolution = unworthiness or guilt/shame – “I can’t contribute.”

Key issue = reflection, wholeness, integration of self Key relationship – family, world, friends Successful resolution = wisdom, contentment – “wow! What a good life”–acceptance of worth, no fear of death Unsuccessful resolution = bitterness, anger, rejection and fear of death – “Is this all there is?” Feeling cheated
