The party last night was fun, I arrived late to class this morning. (run-on sentence) Independent clause = a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, makes sense together, and can stand alone as a complete sentence Independent clause  the party last night was fun

(“Playing in the park” = gerund phrase) Dependent clause = a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, makes sense together, but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence (usually because it contains a subordinating word) A dependent clause needs to be attached to an independent clause (or add more words, or eliminate the subordinating word).
