3 Sentence Errors – Basic Vocabulary Run-on sentence = 2 or more independent clauses linked together with a comma, or with no punctuation at all. The party last night was fun, I arrived late to class this morning. (run-on sentence) Independent clause = a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, makes sense together, and can stand alone as a complete sentence Independent clause  the party last night was fun

4 Sentence Errors Independent clause  I arrived late to class Reading is fundamental. (“Reading” = gerund) Gerund = verb used as a noun (subject) Playing in the park was fun as a kid. (“Playing in the park” = gerund phrase) Dependent clause = a group of words that contains a subject and a verb, makes sense together, but cannot stand alone as a complete sentence (usually because it contains a subordinating word) A dependent clause needs to be attached to an independent clause (or add more words, or eliminate the subordinating word).

5 Sentence Errors I ran  an independent clause Because I ran  a dependent clause (not a complete sentence) Because it is fun  a dependent clause I enjoy playing the French horn, because it is fun. (We’ve attached the dependent clause to the independent clause.) Because = a subordinating conjunction

6 Sentence Errors - Examples R.O. – Why? Reading is fundamental, personally I would prefer to turn a page than scroll a kindle. Fragment – Why? For example, when people thought television would banish the radio, and movies the live theater.

7 Sentence Errors - Examples He then explains how the history of literacy, how thousands of years ago men would make meaningful marks and how they would record the most important events in the past and because of it that led to more advanced writing. Sentence Error? Why?

9 Peer Editing Highlight your thesis sentence, both copies… Begin with first essay (Peer Editing, 1 st one) Groups of 5 Pass essay to your left (4 times) Please write 3 positives and 3 areas to work on Edit what you can on the essay itself (emphasis on writing complete sentences)
