2 Use The indefinite article When do we use the indefinite article? 1.Before countable nouns which are mentioned for the first time: In this picture I see a car parked in front of a house. 2. Before nouns which can represent a group of things: When a thief meets a saint, all he sees is pockets.

3 The indefinite article When do we use “a” and when do we use “an”? We use “a” before nouns beginning with a consonant: When a thief kisses you, count your teeth. We use “an” before nouns beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u): I think Jones is an innocent man. When a vowel is pronounced as a consonant:When a consonant is not pronounced at all: a university [ ju:nə'v ɜ :rsətı ] a union [ 'ju:njən ] an hour [ a ʋ ər ] an honest [ ' ɒ nıst ] man * Exceptions:
