Progressive Movement

Why do Georgians dislike the const. of 1868? 1. imposed rights of blacks 2. congress has a great deal of power over the state (drafted largely by Radical Republicans) 3.political reminder of little power of S. Democrats

What does the South ___? reconstruction Have? Raw materials (cotton) Livestock Transportation Able bodied workers Available/fertile land Not? $ Ownership of homes factories

Traditional Plan Johnson’s Farm produces cotton. Typically, they get.03/lb for the cotton. They sell the cotton to Heard Industry (north). Heard Industry will take the raw material of cotton and make cotton cloth. Heard Industry will sell cloth to south, northern states, and other countries. Sells for.07/yard

Weakness in tradition: Southern farmers don’t realize true value Not introduced to “business plans” Group/person/company that will invest $

Henry Grady’s Plan Theory- Raw materials + workers+ industry= profit 4 south (strong economy) In reality- Raw materials + workers – industry – control prices – support/organization – sell only to a few northern consumers = profit 4 south

Quick Write 10A What is the message Henry Grady is attempting to relay? Is GA, in your opinion equipped to be less dependent on the North? justify

What is the message Henry Grady is attempting to relay? Henry Grady-New South (industry, self sufficiency, manipulate natural resources)

Grange Raw materials + workers –industry – control of prices (product) + control of freight rates + grange – sell to few N. consumers doesn’t = profit 4 south Farmers’ Alliance Raw materials + workers – industry – control of prices (product) + control of freight rates + support/organization – sell to few N. consumers + buying products in bulk doesn’t = profit 4 south

Even though GA has added support /organization and control of freight, how will they spread the word/ “advertise” their value? International Cotton Exposition- attention to GA for natural resources, jobs, industry

What is the key component necessary 4 the South to be self-sufficient & profitable? What factors prohibit this key component?

Political Parties Republicans- Reconstruction Era Democrats- Redemption Era –S–Some Democrats believe the Bourbon Triumvirate (brown, colquitt, and gordon) benefited wealthy –B–Bka independent Democrats (William and Rebecca Felton) begin Progressive Movement –G–GA Stories- Rebecca Latimore Felton

What do YOU think? If you believe GA has the resources necessary to be less dependent on the North, how could they go about utilizing their raw materials? Could they create industry to create finished products? Are they on the concept of “it ain’t broke, so don’t try to fix it?” Meaning the south produces raw materials and the north produces finished products.

The Progressive Movement Goal: Progress SocietyBusinessGovernment fight poverty improve working conditions votes for women prison reform outlaw alcohol break up large corporations regulate businesses decrease corporate power in government greater voice of “the people” more voters did not seek to increase participation of blacks in elections

Goals of Progressive Movement 1. education- 2. working conditions in factories 3.reforms in prisons and mental hospitals 4. improve lives of poor and middle income 5. suffrage/temperance

Reasoning 1. state tax $ cut –supplies 2.safety 3.state $ cut; influx of the pop 4. lowering state taxes didn’t help; hurt assistance programs 5. increase women rights; influx in prisons and mental hospitals
