9/9/14 Objective: What is discovery science? *Take out HW, keep for now Do Now: Write down 3 observations (things that you can actually see that are important to the picture)

Observation: Using your senses to gather information - This information gathered is called DATA

Qualitative: characteristics that cannot be easily measured or counted (ex. color, texture) Data can be put into 2 categories Quantitative observations: involve numbers, such as counting or measuring objects

Quantitative or Qualitative A woman recording behavior of chimps A chimpanzee getting an IQ test What would a scientist do with this information?

Inference: A logical conclusion based on an observation

Generalization: Many observations put together to reach a general conclusion. Ex. Scientists made many observations of the tissue of plants and animals to come to the generalization that “all living things are made up of cells.”

Discovery Science: Describes natural processes through observation and data collection.
