World Cultures PowerPoint Chap 10-1 By: Bill N.

India and the Subcontinent  Relations between India and Pakistan remain tense.  They fight over the Kashmir region, which controls the source of irrigation water.  The people that live in Kashmir are mostly Muslims who favor Islamic Pakistan.  Today, both nations have nuclear weapons and the situation remains tense.

India and the World  During the Cold War, India chose nonalignment.  While it rejected military alliance from either the Soviet Union or the United States, it accepted aid from both.  India also has strained relations with China, who occupies the Tibet region just north of India.  This is why India continues to develop nuclear weapons.

Pakistan and the World  Unlike India who chose nonalignment, Pakistan took a anti-communist stance during the Cold War.  It saw the Soviet Union as a threat.  Pakistan is also friendly with Muslim Middle East countries.  It has ties with Turkey, and Iran.

Afghanistan and the World  Afghanistan was invaded and ruled by the Soviet Union for 10 years.  When Soviet troops withdrew, battles for power were fought.  The Taliban gained control.  The Taliban protected Osama Bin Laden. After the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, the U.S. launched a campaign to overthrow the Taliban.  A new Afghan government is now in place, but the country is still not in peace.
