Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? George Washington (no party) came before. Thomas Jefferson Came after him and he was a Democratic Republican 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. The First contested election. Thomas Jefferson was against the Federalist system and a strong central government. Adams was a strong supporter of Federalism and distrusted the masses. Adams won with 71 electors to 68 for Jefferson. Jefferson became Adam’s Vice President
