Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Gerald Ford (Republican) preceded him and Ronald Reagan (Republican) followed him 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. The scandals of the Nixon administration also tarnished Gerald Ford. The pardon of Richard Nixon and the fall of South Vietnam weakened him and the country wanted an outsider

Carter’s battles with Congress, high fuel prices and a stagnant economy caused additional doubts. Ronald Reagan presented a strong image and that led to Carter’s defeat in 1980
