1 When was Slavery Abolished? ADAPTED FROM ROBERT STANTON’S LESSON PLAN ON THE 13 TH AMENDMENT

3 Reconstruction  the process by which the states that had seceded were reorganized as part of the Union after the Civil War.  the period during which this took place, 1865–77.  The period of time in which the government attempted to put the country back together.

4 Thirteenth Amendment 1865  First reconstruction amendment  “ Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

5 Peace and Equality?  This amendment is the United States’ official action against slavery by abolishing it except as punishment for crimes.  the United States first reconstruction step towards peace and equality  The slaves have been set free, the law is pretty clear, what else do they need?

6 Homework  Directions: Complete the following writing prompt by using what you have learned in this and past classes. Make sure to support your writing with at least 4 facts in relation to reconstruction, the civil war, or the treatment of slaves. Don’t forget to include a definition of the 13 th amendment as well!  Spelling and grammar do count!  At least two paragraphs!  Writing Prompt: “Do you think that the 13 th amendment will solve all of the problems for former slaves in the South? Why or why not?  Explain, and be sure to give me a definition of the 13 th amendment.
