2. Description: This slide show will be used to teach line, geometric shapes and color mixing, elements of design in art. Will will be focusing on the later works of Piet Mondrian. Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) Born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, on March 7, 1872, and originally named Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter who carried abstraction to its furthest limits. Through radical simplification of composition and color, he sought to expose the basic principles that underlie all appearances. Mondrian was the founder of the Neo-plasticism movement. 4. Neo-Plasticism Neo-Plasticism is a rigid form of Abstraction, whose rules allow only for a canvas subsected into rectangles by vertical and horizontal lines, colored using a very limited palette. 6. Objectives: Student will learn the primary colors. Student will learn mixing primary colors for secondary. Student will learn how to create basic geometric shapes from lines. Students will experience a mixed media project. Students will follow the style and technique of famous painter Piet Mondrian.

7. Materials: Black construction paper 12 x 18 Scissors Tempera paint: Red, Yellow and Blue Brushes Water buckets Newspaper Glue Pencils Smocks White sulphite paper 12 x 18

8. Step One: Discuss different lines; horizontal, vertical. Discuss shapes created by the lines. Discuss primary colors; red, yellow, and blue Explain or demonstrate how to arrange strips on paper to create lines and shapes. Hand out white paper, name on the back. Students use 5 strips of paper to create Mondrian like artwork. Can cut off ends that run off side of paper to use for smaller areas inside the artwork.

9. Step Two: Review color chart and how to plan for a secondary color. Demo choosing two primary colors and painting carefully within areas selected. Demo how to mix the two selected primaries into a secondary. Students work to complete assignment. Put on drying rack.

10. Step Three: Hang artworks on chalkboard or other area and discuss what we like about different student works and their choices. Similarities and differences to Mondrian. Positive statements and critique encouraged.
