How to use the PRS Clickers with PowerPoint Created by: Lindsay Proctor

Start By:  Making sure your class is set up in PRS (you can find directions on hand out and Wiki)  Be sure that you have installed PRS and also have Registered the PowerPoint add in.  Once you have registered the PowerPoint add-in and have created your classes in PRS, you are ready to begin using the system with PowerPoint

Creating Power Point  The following directions show you how to create one question on one slide. You may create an entire PowerPoint (PPT) lesson with each slide being a different question, simply by repeating these steps. Or you may take an existing PPT that you have used in the past and insert one or more PRS (student response) slides in the existing PPT lesson.

First create a PPT slide with a question and multiple choice answers.  TIPS  Use the “Title and Text” slide layout  Do not type in the “Title” section; rather include both the question and the answer in the “Text” section. This allows room for the response chart to show without blocking any of the questions.  Animation cannot be used on PPT PRS Question slides

PPT Slide Continued:  After you have created the slide, click on the “New Question” button in the top left corner of the screen. (NOTE: If this button does not appear, you have not registered the PPT add- in as noted earlier. Please do so now. If you have registered the PPT add-in then reboot your computer. It should appear at that point.)

PPT Slide Continued  Once you click on the “New Question” button, you will have several options.  Give the question a name  Choose the type of question  Determine if the choices will be letters or numbers  The number of choices  The amount of points (if you will be using the grading feature)  The correct response  Number of chances (number times students can change their answers)  Time (How long they have to answer the question)

PPT Slide Continued  Once you click “OK” you will be taken back to your PPT screen. You will notice a small icon in the lower left corner of your slide.  SAVE  Congratulations you have created a PPT slide with a PRS question! You can repeat these steps on multiple slides if you wish.

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  The next set of direction show you how to start the presentation and how it works in the classroom setting.  Once you have completed the PPT presentation and are ready to show the slide. Simply start the slideshow as normal.  You will see a box appear when you start the PPT slideshow asking if you want to activate the PRS session now. Click “Yes”

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  Choose the appropriate class that you wish to start the session in. Click “Ok”

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  Choose the appropriate class that you wish to start the session in. Click “Ok”

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  Name the “New Session”. It is suggested that you include the specific class and date in the name.  Chose whether you want the question to Autostart or not. If you choose “No” you will have to click the “Play” button for every slide that has a PRS question.  “Display Mode” shows a chart depicting who has answered the question and who hasn’t  “Show if correct..” allows students to see if they got the right or wrong answer on their clicker LCD screen  “Automatically Show Chart” allows you to show student responses in grid form after each question or not.

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  Once you click “OK”, PPT will register the PRS questions and will activate the slideshow.

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  If you are using Crickets  Students should press the power button  Next, they should type in the 2-digit number in <> inside the yellow bar across the bottom of the screen  Be sure the correct number of clickers have joined by looking at the “Joined” box in the bottom, right corner of the grid  If student, clicker will not join, you can reset the clicker by holding down the power button for 4 seconds until the “battery light” (the light on the far left of the four) flashes once.  Tips  It is important that prior to this you have configured the clickers properly and have created the classes correctly.  Any problems resulting at this point probably are due to the fact that either the clickers or the class has not been set up properly.  Please refer to the directions on how to properly set up classes and clickers…  Students will then need to turn on their clickers. There are a few things to remember at this point:  If your clickers are set to OPEN (Normal)  If you clickers are set up properly they should find the appropriate class that you started in the PRS window.  Students should simply have to press the green “GO” button to join the class.  Once joined the LCD screen should resemble the example below.  ANS:  Proctor 4th P  If your clickers are set to CLOSED  If your class has been set up correctly and your clickers configured as “closed” and you have chosen the correct class….  The clickers should join the class automatically  Once joined the LCD screen should resemble the example below.  ANS:  Proctor 4th P

How To Start The Presentation and How It Works In The Classroom Setting  Once you complete the PPT and all questions have been answered, you must go in to PRS and “END the class”  Click “Yes” at this screen

The End! Congratulations, you have completed the session! For further directions on how to use the grade book and report features look at the given handout or check out the PRS Clicker Wiki.
