1 Is a 504 or IEP More Appropriate for My Child? The most appropriate plan for your child depends on their involvement with Stickler syndrome. The 504 would provide a plan for some basic needs that a child with Stickler syndrome might have. –For example, how to address safety and comfort issues in physical education and the traditional classroom.

2 Is a 504 or IEP More Appropriate for My Child? A child with Stickler syndrome who has more complex needs, because he or she, for example, has been affected by hearing loss and now needs speech services will qualify for an IEP. The IEP would more specifically spell out the related services of speech therapy and/or occupational therapy, and would detail accommodations needed to instruction in the general education or possibly a special education classroom.

3 Is a 504 or IEP More Appropriate for My Child? Because of the progressive and variable nature of Stickler syndrome, your child’s needs may change over time. For example, your child may initially need a 504, but eventually qualify for an IEP or vice versa.

4 What is a 504 Plan? Section 504 requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met. A student's disability and need for accommodations in the general education classroom are documented in the plan. This legally binding plan delineates the specific accommodations for the student, which will be implemented by the school.

5 What is the IEP? A legally binding document that explains exactly what special education services your child will receive. The IEP will include: student’s placement special services/therapies academic/behavioral goals percentage of time in the regular education classroom progress reports from the student’s teachers/ therapists

6 What Happens at a 504 Meeting? A 504 meeting should be scheduled by the school’s 504 coordinator who will lead the meeting. Meeting attendees will depend on the staffing at your child’s school and may include: a counselor the child’s teacher the school nurse a member of the school administrative team the parent (possibly) the student

7 What Happens at a 504 Meeting? A 504 meeting will review plans for accommodation in the regular education context. The 504 will focus on removing any barriers your child might face to accessing instruction or facilities at the school.

8 What Happens at an IEP Meeting? Typical team members for the annual IEP meeting would include: the special education case manager, who would lead the meeting the child’s teacher(s) any therapists involved in providing services to the student the school nurse sometimes member of administration

9 Tips for A Successful Parent/School Partnership Be sure to attend each meeting and arrive prepared. Missing the scheduled meeting can mean a long delay before another meeting can be scheduled, particularly an IEP. Be sure all ideas for accommodations/special education are in writing.

10 Tips for A Successful Parent/School Partnership If attending a new school, be sure to make the school staff aware of an existing 504 or IEP for your child, and let staff know about your child’s needs. Don’t “exclude” a teacher from the IEP/504 meeting.

11 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting It is helpful if you can go into the meeting knowing what accommodations or services you want for your child. Prior to the meeting, it is advisable to write down a list of your child’s current and foreseeable complications from Stickler syndrome/issues you may wish to have addressed.

12 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting You should bring any doctor’s reports that may be applicable to planning your child’s services. Printing information from the SIP website describing Stickler syndrome may help as well. On the SIP website, there is a “teacher” section with handouts that can be printed off and given to your child’s teachers at a 504/IEP meeting.

15 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting Put your solution or suggestions out there, and know that ultimately it is the school’s responsibility to provide services or to offer alternatives. If you have concerns, be sure to have these noted on the IEP/504. If you do not agree with the IEP you can also have this noted and ask for the school district to revise the IEP.

16 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting Remember that even if your child is performing at or above average academically, he or she may still qualify for a 504 or IEP plan based on his or her physical issues.

17 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting In addition, it is advisable to go into the 504/IEP knowing which accommodations you or your child may want flexibility with and to ask that language in the 504/IEP reflect this.

18 How to prepare for an IEP/504 meeting For example, if your child needs access to an elevator only when joint pain presents itself, the language of the 504/IEP should note that the elevator will be used on an as needed basis according to the child or parent discretion.
