Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Chester A. Arthur (Republican) preceded him and Benjamin Harrison (Republican) followed him.

3 The Election - continued 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. Cleveland ran against James G. Blaine (Blaine! Blaine! James G. Blaine – Continental liar from the state of Maine) who was assailed because of his railroad connections by Democrats. The country was in a reform mindset and Blaine was not that guy. Cleveland was accused of a premarital affair in which he fathered a child and was paying child support. He also supported Civil Service Reform and soft money. When he won the election the Democrats used the slogan. “Ma, Ma, where’s my pa? He went to the White House Ha, Ha, Ha! Electoral Vote – Cleveland 219, Blaine 182

When he left office, was it by: choice, defeat, natural death, assassination, or resignation. Explain your answer. He was defeated by Benjamin Harrison. The tariff position by Cleveland (lowering it) and his position against soft money cost him the election

5 Domestic Issues and Events 1886 – Haymarket Riot, AFof L and Sam Gompers, Pres. Succession Act of 1886 (includes the Cabinet process) 1887 – Interstate Commerce Commission, Dawes Act, Hatch Act Gold – Silver Debates continued Vetoed Pension and Relief Bills – “a drain on the Treasury.”
