1.  Thesis Statement : The social stratification of society is essential for the institution of work in both Canada and XXXX to function effectively and meet the needs of all members of society; therefore the functionalist theory most effectively explains the structure of this institution.

2.  The institution of work meets basic needs within society by providing a means of income, and subsistence, for people. As well as providing people with access to various services and products carried out and produced by other workers in society.  Some jobs require more knowledge and skills than others. It is because of the difference in requirements to perform certain jobs that some jobs pay more than others, and have more social value. As the Functionalist theory points out this inequality is necessary because it motivates the people with the necessary skills and abilities to pressure jobs that require more training (Haviland, 2005. P297). Only in this way are all the necessary work positions in society filled by qualified people.

3.  The level of control that the institution has over the individual may depend on the occupation that the individual has. For example someone in the military will experience more direct control being imposed on them then someone who runs their own business.  However, almost all people’s daily schedules are organized around their job. You are required to be at work during specific times and can only take a certain amount of brakes.

5.  In order to survive in society you need money to purchase food, clothing and shelter, all the basic needs for survival, to get money you must work.  To maintain a job you must meet to the demands of your job and meet the values of the institution. If you do not you risk being dismissed from your job and left with no income.

6.  Talk briefly about pre-industrial work, so self sufficiency of the family, guilds, and crafts men.  The Industrial Revolution, the shift from rural life to urban life. How factory work and the clock contributed to re-ordering of people’s lives and their separation from the means of production  The current shift into the information age.
