3 Nominate To officially put forth a candidate to run for political office

4 Electorate The body of persons entitled to vote in an election.

5 Monitor “Watchdogs” Watching the actions of public officials from the other party Informing the public of any wrongdoing

6 Conservative Political views that favor traditional ideas about individual responsibility, family life, and business freedom. Believe the role of government and federal social programs should be limited Conservatives tend to be members of the Republican party

7 Liberal Political views that favor a large role for the government Believe government should create extensive social welfare programs to help meet needs of citizens Liberals tend to be members of the Democratic Party

8 Political Center Political Views that tend to fall in the middle of conservative and liberal views. Political Parties try to appeal to the Political Center in order to attract more voters and ensure majority support.

9 Political cartoon Cartoons used to influence or express strong political views

10 Political Spectrum The imaginary line stretching from liberal (left wing) to conservative (right wing) along which political views can be placed.

11 Mass media All forms of communication including radio, TV, newspapers, books, magazines, Internet, recordings, movies, etc…

12 Editorial In a newspaper, a short essay that gives the newspaper publisher’s or editor’s view of a public issue. Focuses public attention on an important issue Gets public officials to act

13 Op-ed Commentary essays run in a newspaper, (opposite the editorial page). They may be submitted by anyone (readers, political leaders, experts.)

14 Forum An assembly, meeting place for discussion of questions of public interest.
