7 Uses of Tungsten 1.useful for glass-to-metal seals since the thermal expansion is about the same as borosilicate glass 2.tungsten and its alloys are used extensively for filaments for electric lamps, electron and television tubes, and for metal evaporation work 3.electrical contact points for car distributors 4.X-ray targets 5.windings and heating elements for electrical furnaces 6.missile and high-temperature applications 7.high-speed tool steels and many other alloys contain tungsten 8.the carbide is important to the metal-working, mining, and petroleum industries 9.calcium and magnesium tungstates are widely used in fluorescent lighting 10.tungsten salts are used in the chemical and tanning industries 11.tungsten disulphide is a dry, high-temperature lubricant, stable to 500°C 12.tungsten bronzes and other tungsten compounds are used in paints 13.TV tubes (electron tubes) 14.X-ray targets

8 History of Tungsten 1. Tungsten used to be known as wolfram (from wolframite, said to be named from wolf rahm or spumi lupi, because the ore interfered with the smelting of tin and was supposed to devour the tin). The de Elhuyar brothers found an acid in wolframite in 1783 that they succeeded in reducing to the elemental metal with charcoal.

9 Allotropes, Isotopes and Important Compounds Allotropes:4 A- Tungsten (A W), B Tungsten(B W), Y-Tungsten(Y W), Amorphous Tungsten Isotopes: W 184 Other Important Information: found in Spain. It means heavy stone, gets it’s symbol from German name Wolfram
