1 Major Battles of the Texas Revolution You will need: Writing Utensil Blank battle map notes (given in class) 6 different colors (crayon, marker, highlighter, etc.)

2 The Battle of the Alamo March 6, 1836—fighting to defend their rights Santa Anna underestimated the Texans. 90 minute battle. Mexico wins, but Texans are encouraged to fight! Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color! Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color!

3 The Battle of Refugio March 13, 1836—Fannin sent King to help families escape to Goliad, then sent Ward to help King who was having trouble; Ward & King fought; W escaped, K was captured & executed; disastrous for TX. Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color!

4 The Battle of Coleto Creek March 19, 1836—Fannin’s poor decision making skills left him low on troops and unwilling to retreat to Victoria Texans fight in square formation, are surrounded, forced to surrender, & taken to Goliad Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color!

5 The Goliad Massacre March 27, 1836--prisoners have been told by Urrea that they will not be executed; Santa Anna orders a mass execution; Texans are marched out & shot at close range. Those with skills are spared (“Angel of Goliad”). Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color!

6 The Battle of San Jacinto April 21, 1836—Mexican army is taken by surprise; Vince’s Bridge has been burned, so there is no way to retreat. Texans WIN in 18 minutes. Santa Anna is later found in a soldier’s uniform, but his life is spared in exchange for TX independence Color the starburst Add it to your map, using the same color!

7 The Runaway Scrape Families between Colorado and Brazos Rivers hear Santa Anna’s army is coming and Sam Houston is retreating, so they flee to the Sabine River, burning all supplies along the way. After the Alamo, before San Jacinto. Color the arrow Add it to your map, using the same color!

8 Now fold your paper in half, hamburger style… Answer the following 5 questions in complete sentences: 1.Why do you think the Battle of the Alamo is one of the best known battles in Texas History if Texas didn’t even win? 2.What do you think would have happened at Coleto Creek if Fannin had not sent a portion of his troops to Refugio?

9 3. Do you agree with Santa Anna’s decision to kill all of the prisoners at Goliad? Why or why not? 4. What are three emotions you think families in the Runaway Scrape might have been feeling? 5. 1836 is the fourth date in Texas History that you have to know. Why?
