5 The division of Islam Shi’ite Short for Ahiat Ali or followers of Ali. Ali was Muhammad’s cousin, a philosopher- warrior. His followers say that he was the only one with the spiritual authority to succeed Muhammad. Sunni Followers believed that the caliphate should go to whoever would be best equipped politically to maintain the Muslim Empire.
