THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Catechism pp. 53-98

On Mt. Sinai God gave three kinds of laws to Moses for the people of Israel. He gave the Civil Law to govern them as a nation. For example, the Civil Law established the punishment for crimes such as injury to another person or damage to another person's property (see Exodus 21:22). THE LAW OF MOSES

God also gave Israel the Ceremonial Law. These were the laws which told the people when, where, and how they were to worship God. The laws about priests, the sacrifices, the Sabbath days, the tabernacle - all these were the ceremonial laws.

Thirdly, God gave Israel the Moral Law. God had written the Moral Law in man's heart already at creation because it is God's will for all people of all time. God gave the Moral Law to the people in the form of the Ten Commandments. In these Ten Commandments God told the people of Israel how His holy will for all people applied in a special way to them as His chosen people.

What is the simplest summary of God's law? Matthew 22:37-40 Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. "Love God and your neighbor!" is the simplest summary of God's law.

Why Obey the Commandments? 1 John 4:19 We love because He first loved us. Ephesians 5:1-2 Be imitators of God as dearly loved children, and live a life of love. 1 John 5:3 This is love for God, to obey His commandments. We do not obey to earn our way to heaven. Jesus has already done that. We obey to thank and praise God that we are going to heaven!

Can anyone, then, be saved by obeying the law? Galatians 3:10-11 Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law. No one is justified by the law. Romans 3:20 Through the law we become conscious of sin. No one can be saved by obeying the law.

How, then, Can We be Saved? 2 Corinthians 5:15 Christ died for all that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again. Hebrews 4:14-15 We have a great high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet was without sin.
