 How many short stories did he publish?  When did he die?  Which one of his stories was considered one of the most important works of Modernist Literature?  What was his first publication?  In what year did he move to Paris? And what did he do there?

 James Joyce was born in Dublin, on February 2, 1882, as the son of John Stanislaus Joyce and Mary Jane Murray who was ten years younger than her husband and was an accomplished pianist.  At age six he was educated by Jesuits at Clongowes Wood College at Clane.  His first publication was an essay on Ibsen’s play When We Dead Awaken.  In 1902 he moved to Paris and worked as a journalist and teacher. After a year he went back to Dublin because his mother was dying.

 Shortly after she had died he left Dublin with Nora Barnaclem a chambermaid who he married in 1931.  Throughout his life he published 15 short stories.  He died on January 13, 1941

 Ulysses, one of his best works was published in 1922 and was one of the most important works of modernist literature. It also has been called “a demonstration and summation of the entire movement”.  Finnegans Wake, has a reputation of one of the most difficult of fiction in the English language. It was published on May 4, 1939.

 It has been said that more writers and artist have been influenced by James Joyce than any other author of the twentieth century.  He is mentioned in more works than any other writer except Shakespeare.

 After The Race  He knew that he would regret in the morning but at present he was glad of the rest, glad of the dark stupor that would cover up his folly. He leaned his elbows on the table and rested his head between his hands, counting the beats of his temples. The cabin door opened and he saw the Hungarian standing in a shaft of grey light:  "Daybreak, gentlemen!"
