Chapters 49-52 By Caroline Ladlow and Abby Belser

Reading Summary Pip visits Miss Havisham and she apologizes and mourns for what she’s done to him. During his walk, he thought he saw her, and goes back up to make sure everything is alright. He discovers Miss Havisham has caught fire, and extinguishes it to save her. When he goes back home, Herbert and Pip discuss Provis’ story. Pip concludes that Provis is Estella’s father and then goes to discuss it with Jaggers. Jaggers points out that no one would benefit from that information being revealed. Pip and Herbert then prepare to move Provis to get him out of England. Before they begin, Pip gets a threatening note to go to the marshes, and he leaves right away.

New Information Miss Havisham is capable of feeling guilty. Provis is Estella’s father. Estella is married. Pip’s Adventures: He suffered a severe burn. He figures out Estella’s heritage. He makes the plans to move Provis. He receives a threatening letter.

Literary Terms Similes: The cathedral chimes… so the swell of the old organ was born to my ears like funeral music (367). The nooks of ruin… were almost as silent as the old monks in their graves (367). I still held… like a prisoner who might escape (374). Metaphor: For I had… and I felt that the dying light was suited to my last view of it (372). But as she grew… I stole her heart away and put ice in its place (371). And now indeed… soon be driving with the winds and waves (also alliteration) (387)

Literary Terms Foreshadowing: The threatening note that Pip receives telling him to travel to the marshes. (389) Imagery: By the wilderness of casks…(372)

Class Discussion Why is Miss Havisham suddenly feeling remorse about what she’s done to Pip? How is this breaking her stereotype? Even after Pip says that he forgives her, Miss Havisham continues to repent. Why do you think she carries on? Why do you think Provis’s wife was jealous enough to commit murder? For what reason do you think she took the child and left?

Class Discussion Do you think it was wise for Pip to talk to Jaggers about Estella’s heritage? Why? Who do you think wrote the letter telling Pip to go to the marshes? Why? Would you have listened to the note? What do you think Pip was thinking as he heard the landlord tell his story? Why do you think that?
