1  Homework on the top right hand corner of your desk.  Answer the following in complete sentences on notebook paper:  Write about a situation when you had a problem with your best friend. What choices did you struggle to make? How was the problem solved? What was the outcome of the problem?

4  SWBAT define internal and external conflict.  SWBAT explain how an author’s use of conflict impacts the quality of the story.

6  Conflict: The main problem in a story  Internal Conflict – a struggle that takes place in a character’s mind (person vs. self).  Ex: You know there is a test tomorrow. Should you go to the movies with friends or take the time to study for your test??  External Conflict – a struggle between a character and an outside force (person vs. world, person vs. person, etc.).  Ex: Woody and Buzz Lightyear do not get along at the beginning of Toy Story and attempt to sabotage one another.

7 1. Man vs. Self: (Internal conflict) This conflict occurs when a character has a tough decision to make or struggles with his/her thoughts and ideas. 2. Man vs. Man: (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character has an argument, disagreement, or fight with another character. 3. Man vs. Nature (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character battles a force of nature (earthquakes, hurricanes, animals, etc.) 4. Man vs. Society (External conflict) This conflict occurs when a character disagrees with the laws or beliefs of a society. 5. Man vs. Technology (External conflict) This conflict occurs between a character and technology such as machines, robots, etc.

8 Example Type of Conflict A man must face a dangerous storm in order to make it back to his country. Man vs. Nature A police officer tries to stop a robber from robbing a bank. Man vs. Man A superhero must decide not to use super powers to cheat on a test. Man vs. Self An alien must prove to the people of the city that he is not dangerous. Man vs. Society A woman must battle a group of robots to save her city. Man vs. Technology

9  With a partner, list an example of each of the 5 types of conflict.  Think of movies you’ve seen and books you’ve read to help you.  5 minutes total

10  Answer the following in complete sentences:  How does conflict help to grab your attention as a reader? Why is it important to grab a reader's attention? Do you have to use a conflict to grab a reader's attention?

11  In writing, it is important to grab your reader's attention toward the beginning of a writing piece. This is known as a hook.  You can use "attention grabbers" such as:  Rhetorical questions  Interesting facts  Quotes  Descriptions  Personal Experiences

12  Prompt: What characteristics make a good actor? Think of several television and/or film performances you have seen. The write an essay discussing the features of good acting.  Rhetorical question: What is the true definition of “good” acting?  Interesting fact: In actuality, numerous citizens aspire to be actors, but very few of them make it to the “big screen”.  Quote: Nicholas Cage, a famous actor once stated, “To be a good actor you have to be something like a criminal, to be willing to break the rules to strive for something new.” I agree with this quote because…  Description: A good actor possess qualities such as being diligent, hard-working, being believable, and a commitment to performing to the best of their ability.  Personal Experience: When I participated in a play in 2 nd grade, I prepared by memorizing my lines and rehearsing constantly. Truly great actors do the exact same thing to make themselves successful.
