1. A BRIEF OVERVIEW

2. Brief History In 1959, three Army Officers conceived the idea of a challenge for young people over Dartmoor. The first event had only 203 boys and girls, but these days a limit has to be imposed of 2400, 400 teams of 6. At first, teams were known as ‘Patrols’ and were made up of 10. This was reduced gradually to the more manageable size of 6.

Dartmoor may be a scenic moor- land, but its weather conditions are rarely ideal In 1998 temperatures fluctuated around the high 20°C, dehydration became a major concern In 1996 the event saw Dartmoor’s worst Spring, snow and sleet storms blanketed the moor, and a mass evacuation was undertaken by the Army. In 2007 another mass evacuation of the moor was ordered due to torrential rain and dangerous flooding. Survival on the moor is always in the back of the minds of participants, it has to be, lives can depend on it

4. Teams are made up of 6 young people. A two day self- sufficient expedition across the wilderness of Dartmoor. 3 possible routes of varying length and difficulty…35, 45, and 55 mile route.

5. THS and Ten Tors Hardye’s CCF entered its first team to the event in 2003, a 35 mile route, which they successfully completed as a full team in the time allowed. Since then, Hardye’s CCF has seen another 4 successful 35 teams & 3 successful 45 teams. The first 55 team was entered in 2007…they had completed 35 miles before the event was called off!

6. Every participant from THS CCF agrees that Ten Tors is one of the most fulfilling challenges they have ever achieved. The camaraderie and team spirit binds the team, as each other's wellbeing and ultimately our lives have been entrusted to one another.
