3 Brief History Owned privately by Samuel Ellis in the 1770s Bought by the U.S. government in 1808 Became a military fortification just before the War of 1812

4 Brief History From 1892-1954, twelve million immigrants enter America through Ellis Island Annie Moore, a 15 year old Irish girl was the first person to be processed at Ellis Island

5 The Process People were taken from the ships by ferry to Ellis Island Immigrants had the papers inspected and health checked Only 2% of immigrants were not allowed to enter the U.S.
