F L O O D Flash floods are the #1 killer in the US A flood is heavy rain or melting snow. Terms to know: Flood/Flashflood Watch- flooding may happen soon Flood Warning – you may be asked to leave the area. A flood may be happening or will be very soon. Flashflood Warning – A flashflood is happening. Get to high ground right away. Tell an adult!

TSUNAMI Made by underwater earthquakes Water flows straight not in circles Runs quickly over land as a wall of water Ground under water breaks and waves leave water Can be as fast as 500 miles per hour

Hurricanes Lasts for a week Gather heat and energy through contact with warm waters A hurricane can be up to 600 miles across a state At speeds of 75 to 200 mph

T O R N A D O Sun and cold air chase each other around Formed by thunderstorms A waterspout is a weak tornado formed over water Can have wind speeds up to 300 miles per hour

EARTHQUAKES EARTHQUAKES More than a million rattle the world each year Cannot be predicted – scientists are working on it About 20 plates along the surface of the earth that more consistantly and slowly pass each other

SNOW BLIZZARD  Derives energy from the clash of two air masses of different temperatures and moisture levels  Winds are over 35 mph  Do not eat snow it will lower your body temperature  Brief intense snow showers accompanied by strong gusty winds

V o l c a n o e s More than 1500 are on earth 80 or more are under the oceans It can cause a flash flood and an earthquake

THUNDERSTORM Caused by: moisture, unstable air and lift MOISTURE – forms clouds & rain UNSTABLE AIR – relatively warm and rises rapidly LIFT – formed from fronts, sea breezes or mountains Likely occur: year round & all hours most likely in spring and summer months afternoon and evening hours ALL THUNDERSTORMS ARE DANGEROUS – produce lightning Estimated 1800 thunderstorms occur across planet daily

Type of winter storm caused by freezing rain Results in accumulation of at least 0.25 inch of ice on exposed surfaces Creates a glaze of ice ICE STORM
