Crack that MBA interview

Submit. Click. It is done and now you wait. Seconds turn into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, days into weeks and weeks into months (sometimes!). Wait anxiously to get the interview. And now the mail has arrived! Congratulations! You have passed the initial screening and the school is interested in knowing more about you. Now all you need to do is impress your interviewer and show him/her that you are as good (no, even better!) in person as you are on that application you submitted.

Much easier said than done. In this post, we would like to give you tips to boost your chance to convert the interview to an admission offer. Listen Yes, we start off with this simple and basic tip. Pay complete attention and listen to what your interviewer is asking. There is no bigger turn-off for an interviewer than a candidate who does not answer the question being asked. You must, must, must control your nerves and answer his question.

A simple example (based on a true story): The interviewer says: “What is your short-term post-MBA goal?” and the interviewee starts off by saying ”I always wanted to be in consulting, so I want to pursue an MBA education so that ….”. It sounds like a silly mistake but this mistake is repeated over and over again. Listen carefully and answer the question asked and not what you think the question is.

Eye Contact: This is a must for an in-person face to face interview. Over Skype, it might be more difficult but still you need to maximize your eye contact with the interviewer. breaking up for 2-3 seconds. Repeat the same pattern. This habit comes only with practice. Make a video of yourself to see how you actually perform and the result might shock you. No, we are not talking about staring and making things awkward. A simple rule is to look at the interviewer for 10 seconds before

Relax: If you do not relax, you can not be comfortable and would not be able to put your best foot forward. Reach the spot early, practice breathing exercise and stay calm. Interview is an important part of an application but not the only aspect the school looks at (Many times, candidates with great interviews did not get the call but candidates who drowned in the interview were given admission!).

Know your story in and out You can not completely guide where your interview goes (The skill can be learned but never be completely relied on). You need to know everything there is to know about you. your past and where you want to go. Add to this point the research about this particular school and how it “fits” into your story. Have complete faith in “You” and the interview will be a breeze.

Practice, practice and then practice some more: There is no substitute for hard-work. This adage is true for interviews as well! Practice different questions, different interview styles and in different settings (coffee-house/ virtual / hotel lobby etc.). You need to prepare standard questions and know them in your sleep as well.
