3. THREE MAIN REGIONS LOCATED IN QUEBEC 1.Canadian Shield:- rugged & forested (rocky; hilly) - little good soil (thin soil; cool temp.) - many river & lake systems (transport) - rich in animals with fur (beaver, moose) - large spruce & pine forests (raw materials) 2. Appalachians: - mountain chain along southern border of Quebec - forested area (hunting/food, fur) - warm in summer; some areas suited for farming - fishing along coast - TODAY: apple orchards, maple syrup, cows!! 3. St. Lawrence Lowlands: - plain (flat) with good soil for farming - warmest region in Quebec - dense forest (source of food & raw materials =$) - best suited for settlement despite cold winters - St. Lawrence River = efficient transportation

4. CANADIAN LANDSCAPE: OVERVIEW The bottom line is that Quebec’s elaborate lakes and rivers provided excellent means of travel into the interior of the territory for both the Native population and European explorers alike. Waterways also provided a plentiful source of food and revenue (fish & furs). The climate was severe being very warm in the summer and very cold in the winter.

5. ENTRY ROUTES FROM THE ATLANTIC OCEAN  Hudson Bay – sea only ice free for approx. 4 months in summer & early fall.  St.Lawrence/Great Lakes Axis – important waterway linking route to heart of the continent. Iced in winter.  Hudson/Mohawk – route through Appalachians btw. New York & Buffalo. NY ice-free port.  Mississippi River – easy route but far to the south and controlled by the Spanish.
