Charles I ► Charles I takes over ► Struggled with parliament ► Supported “Divine Rights of the King” ► Religious conflicts (supported Catholics) ► 1 st Civil War (1642-1645): Opposed by Parliament and Protestants ► Defeated but would not submit ► 2 nd Civil War (1648-1649)-ultimately executed for treason

5. The Commonwealth- (AKA The Interregnum) 1649-1659 ► Oliver Cromwell (The Protectorate)  Milton-close aid to Cromwell ► Big booboo-Cromwell names son Richard Lord Protector

6. The Restoration 1660  ► Charles II reclaims throne ► Re-institutes anti-Protestant policies ► Monarch RESTORED

7. The Restoration and the Status Quo After having read about “The Haves” and “The Have Nots” and also learning about the political issues of the era, we are going to stage a Restoration Rally.
