2 New Area of Politics  Spoils System:  Is the practice of appointing people to government jobs on the basis of party loyalty & support Jackson forced out a lot of government employees in order to get his “people” in

3 Native Americans  Indian Removal Act  Was the “peaceful” negotiation of exchanging American Indian lands in the south for new lands in Indian territory  Passed by Jackson

4 Native Americans  Worcester v. Georgia  Issue: The Cherokee’s of Georgia were ignoring the Removal Act because they had adopted “White Culture” The Cherokee then sue the state of Georgia  Verdict: Georgia’s land seizure was unconstitutional The federal government had an obligation to protect Indians  Impact Jackson refused to support the decision Sent Martin Van Buren (U.S. Army)

5 Jackson battles the Banks  In 1832 Congress extended the U.S. Banks charter for 20 years  Jackson vetoed the Bill  Bank Supporters created  Whig Party

6 Election of 1840  Who Ran  Democrats – Martin Van Buren (re-election)  Whigs – William Henry Harrison John Tyler  Strategy:  Whigs portray Harrison as a simple farmer who lived in a log cabin ………  Whigs said Van Buren was a corrupt aristocrat aka “Rich Dude”  Wings Won  Significance  Harrison will die from inaugural address –Pneumonia  Tyler takes office and ignores whip party
