Procedure Writing ALARA Radiological Safety and Response RPT-243-PE-2

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to: Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively to develop and implement a simple work procedure to perform a common task. Demonstrate the ability to apply various ALARA principles including: dose goals, RWP planning, time, distance, and shielding.

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d): Identify the pre-job radiological survey requirements for the work operation to be performed. Based on the results of the pre-job surveys and the scope of work, identify or evaluate the need for the following: a formal ALARA review pre-job briefings with workers the type and location of whole-body dosimeters, multiple whole-body dosimeters, and extremity dosimeters protective clothing requirements respiratory protection requirements

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d): Based on the results of the pre-job surveys and the scope of work, identify or evaluate the need for the following (cont’d): special precautions or conditions to minimize the spread of contamination, reduce exposure, or minimize airborne contamination the degree of radiological protection technicians’ on- the-job coverage in-process radiological surveys to be performed radiological hold points

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d): Discuss generic plant procedures for conducting pre-job briefings for radiological work, including: – when briefings are required, – the frequency of briefings for continuing jobs, – personnel required to attend briefings, – items to be discussed in briefings, and – the importance of resolving all questions in briefings.

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d): Identify generic locations to be included in process radiation surveys, such as: – component being worked on, – nearby piping and components, – location where workers are positioned, – path to and from the work site, – low dose areas, – hot spots, and – potentially transient dose rate areas (resin lines, drain lines, movement of sources).

Learning Outcome Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d): Demonstrate the proper use of the 3 part communication model including the use of the phonetic alphabet and numeric communication. Demonstrate the proper use of the STAR acrostic to exercise self-checking.

Outline Explanation of the Practical Exercise Procedure Writing Scenario Set-Up Section 1 - Procedure Writing Section 2 - ALARA Applied Section 2 - RWPs

Explanation The same team assignments made in PE-1 will continue into this PE. This PE has three sections. The first section involves the students creating a procedure for performing a common task. Each team will complete the section as a team. The second section will involve the teams developing team and individual dose budgets for use in the course for the semester.

Explanation The third section involves the generation of a General RWP for use in the course. The students are given necessary historical and survey information needed to write the RWP. The teams will be held accountable for the use of proper three-part communication and human performance tools during the PE.

Procedure Writing

Instructions The Instructor is the Subject Mater Expert (SME) KISS (keep it simple slick) Timed Follow the Student Guide as a procedure. Use the standard procedure format as follows:

Standard Procedure Format Title: Description of the task addressed in the procedure. Purpose: Description of the reason why the procedure is written. Scope: What are the boundaries of the procedure? Safety Precautions and Limitations: What are the safety implications of not performing the task properly and what are the hazards that might be encountered during the task? What must be done to ensure proper task performance?

Standard Procedure Format Safety Equipment: List all Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) and materials needed to perform the task safely and in accordance with established safety policies and standards. Equipment and Materials: List those things that are needed in order to complete the task. References: List sources which are referenced within the procedure that are necessary for completing the task. Procedure: Sequential listing of the steps needed to achieve the stated purpose of the procedure.

ALARA

Scenario Set-Up Top Notch Inc. (your employer) has set an aggressive dose goal for the semester. They have decided that the total collective dose for the organization for the semester will not exceed 1.5 person-rem for all training activities. The department head has challenged the Instructors to coordinate with the students to implement plans to ensure that goal is met. Your team is assigned to develop the goals needed to meet the organizations goals.

Instructions The Instructor is the group Supervisor The class will function in the previously assigned teams. The section is timed. Follow the Student Guide as your procedure.

RWP

Scenario Set-Up Your team has been given the assignment to write a new General RWP for the class to be used during the semester for practical exercise activities at ATC. You have been supplied all of the required information with the PE Student Guide.

Instructions The Instructor is the group Supervisor The class will function in the previously assigned teams. The section is timed. Follow the Student Guide as your procedure.
