2 Performance Pathways Be able to explain the concept of the sporting pyramid and it’s four levels To know the role of the key UK agencies in the development of sport in the UK.

4 Sports Pyramid The different levels of sport can be represented best in a pyramid. Such concept is used by many sports organisations to develop a continuum of participation. In theory the broader the base of participation the greater the elite pool from which selection can take place.

6 The most common pathway is represented in a SPORTING PYRAMID Q What do performers do as they reach their potential?

7 Sporting Pyramid There are 4 levels to the sporting Pyramid The Foundation level/ Grassroots The Participation Level The Competition Level The Elite Level 10 minutes to research using your books or the internet about the above levels?

8 Foundation Level Also known as Grass Roots Level Mainly associated with introducing young children to sport and encouraging them to learn the fundamental motor skills. In the UK schemes such as TOP SPORT and DRAGON SPORT have been used by sports councils to promote participation amongst children.

9 Participation Level Refers to sport undertaken primarily for fun and enjoyment. Often at basic level of competence. Many very competitive sports people take part in sport purely for reasons of FUN, HEALTH and FITNESS.

10 Competition Level Also known as the PERFORMANCE LEVEL. Reflects a more structured form of competitive sport at CLUB or COUNTY level. Or indeed at an INDIVIDUAL LEVEL for personal reasons.

11 Elite Level Applies to performers at the HIGHEST NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL Level.

12 The Role of the key UK Sports Agencies The development and organisation of sport in the UK has not followed a regular pattern. Individuals, groups and clubs have always been free to develop their sport as they liked and the government has never involved itself directly in the organisation of sport at either local or national level.

13 The Role of the key UK Sports Agencies Today there are 3 key agencies that oversee sport in the UK. Can you name these three agencies discuss in pairs and write down your answers ?

14 UK Sport Sports England ( Sports Council for Wales, Sport Scotland and Sports Council for N. Ireland) Youth Sports Trust Research information about the above three using your textbook or the internet.

Research 2 regional training centres in the UK. 4. Can you identify the key differences between participation and performance levels 5. What are the two main goals of UK SPORT
