2 A season in review… Once again this group of ladies has assembled an impressive season.. As the team tried to set some goals early on, the main one was simple, be as good as they could be. No one really seemed to know exactly what that meant. Of course they wanted to compete for the district crown and advance into the regionals. But as the players progressed through the weeks of preparation, the endless drills, the cold and blustery weather, the first match crept closer and soon arrived. The time for talk was at an end. Throughout this, the team was focused knowing that last season’s tournament champion, Massaponax, was on the schedule 1st this season. The top 6 had a new look but plenty of experience. With a healthier Kelly Anderson at #1 and veterans Miriam Kaplan, Morgan Watt and April Pei at #s 2,3,4 respectively, the singles lineup had a solid core. The key #5 and #6 spots saw sophomores Alison Angell and Valentina Moshnikova step into roles held by more experienced players in past years. The doubles line- up was also solid with the #1 and #2 teams of Anderson/Kaplan and Watt/Pei returning from last season. The #3 spot paired Angell and senior Theresa Miles in that key role that would prove essential if the team was to pull out tough wins.. In a somewhat unexpected outcome on March 19 th the first match saw that line- up defeat rival Massaponax with relative ease, 8-1. That result would reflect many of the seasons early matches which were highlighted by wins over rivals Western and Monticello who had downed the patriots last year. Even if the weather was eradic, the play of the squad from Albemarle was not, and before long the patriots surprised some teams and coaches by starting 12-0. It would prove to be Stafford who would threaten Albemarle’s stranglehold on the regular season crown. The Indians too had remained undefeated to that point as they headed into a key week that would see the two teams meet in back to back matches. At weeks end, Albemarle was 14-0 and Stafford suffered a pair of tough losses. Both contests were decided by some gutsy singles play and clutch doubles play at #2 and #3. The patriots figured they’d need that again when the time came, likely when these same top two teams met again in the tournament final. When the regular season was over, the still undefeated team had managed a record of 15-0 which was a sign of things to come. All 15 members of the team saw time in the starting line-up and the season’s play was capped by the 6 doubles teams that competed at a high level in the doubles tournament at EC Glass. The top seed stormed by North Stafford and through the Commonwealth district tournament to beat Stafford in a convincing win for the tournament title. It was the first title since 2002 but they didn’t stop there. The patriots dug deep and held on in doubles against Battlefield in the regional quarters. They then sent EC Glass back to Lynchburg in memorable fashion for the first time in many years. And finally Osbourn Park suffered defeat on the Patriots Home courts. When the regional tournament ended, Albemarle, was 20-0, had won the Commonwealth District Title and more impressively the Northwest Region Title for the first time since 1981. They had hosted 13 home matches and would now get to add the State Quarter-finals to that list. It was the team-first mentality that played a role in all the key wins. Some teams had more talented players but they always came up short without the spirited, blue collar, never say die attitude that was the hallmark of the most historic season in a long time. It will not be soon forgotten. April, Miriam, and Theresa Good Luck Next Year!! “You ARE Albemarle Tennis.” From Coach: Welcome to the hottest ticket in town…the Albemarle Girl’s Tennis Banquet! I always say it but coaching this team is among the best parts of my job. It isn’t always easy being away from home that much but I do it because they really are special young people. I am keenly aware I am fortunate to have such great parents who throughout our season support both me and their children in a positive way. What can you say about all this team has accomplished? A great deal…but we don’t have that much time. I think there are great lessons that can be learned from this sport, more than just how to win or lose. To compete at the level they have consistently all season is truly amazing. I will never forget all their efforts, pain and patience that went into this success. Whether it was helping each other get the ball cart, shedding tears from pain, coming to indoor practice after along day, this year provided a lot of memorable moments. The long bus rides, playing 14 matches at home, pulling out wins against Stafford, raising the trophies, shaking hands after a great match, seeing the team gathered around my wife and new daughter, all helped make this season what it was, memorable. Last year I said “the tennis program at AHS has risen to be recognized among one of the more consistent programs in the state.” This years team made team has again proven that to be fact. I sincerely thank the players, parents, and everyone who helped make this year’s hard work so worthwhile. Thanks and I hope tonight ads to the great memories!! Sincerely, Coach Lindsay AHS #1 District + Region Champs 2007 “Who has the directions to States?”
