2. What is it? Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by too much mitosis. A tumour (a group of cells that do not perform a function) is usually formed (except in leukemia). It can occur in any part of the body.

3. 3 Major Types There are 3 major types: Carcinomas: Epithelial cell (eg. Skin) cancer Sarcoma: Connective tissue (eg. Bone) cancer Lymphoma: Blood cell (eg. White blood cell) cancer

4. Cause Mutation (mistake) in DNA Cells do not die when they are supposed to. Anything that causes mutation may cause cancer… BUT, It takes several mutations AND Your body is good at finding & fixing mutations.

5. Typical Treatments There is no cure for cancer! Chemotherapy: Chemicals are injected that destroy dividing cells. Radiation: Electromagnetic rays cause so many mutations in tumour cells that the cells die.

6. There’s Hope… Dr. Bell’s research: Premise: Every cell in your body can fight off certain viruses EXCEPT cancer cells (mutation destroys this ability). Potential: Inject harmless virus into tumours (or through IV?). Cancer cells die. Normal cells survive. Currently in human trials.

7. There’s Hope… John Kanzius’ research: Premise: Nanoparticles of metal in cells can be heated from outside the body using non-invasive radio waves. Potential cure: Coat gold nanoparticles with tumour-finding molecules. Aim radio waves at person, tumour is cooked from inside.

8. There’s Hope… Dr. Svitlana Danchuk’s research Premise: A protein (TRAIL) has been found that destroys cancer cells. Certain adult stem cells are always called on to fight cancer cells. Potential cure: Take stem cells from patient, genetically manipulate them to produce TRAIL. Inject.
