Gender and Science Viera Model United Nations

Introduction Committee: UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Topic: Gender and Science/STEM UNESCO’s Goal: It is the responsibility of UNESCO, in keeping with its stated priority of promoting Gender Equality, to reverse the exclusion of women from STEM fields in developing economies, while working to instill the values of equality in developing markets. HOW do we do this?

Goals To make Gender Equality a CENTRAL TENANT of STEM research in some of the most important developing markets in the world. As delegates of the UNESCO committee, we will be the nations making sure UNESCO acts swiftly and effectively by creating policies, international agreements, programs for the United Nations to process/act on

Understanding our Goal Each country has a their own circumstances on how they deal with certain issues or concepts. For the Gender and Science Topic, each participating country will have laws, policies, cultures, economy, political, or other circumstances that respond to Gender Equality in a different manner. Each country can react and consider a solution in a different manner, because of the civil society, culture, religion, government, economy, etc, that is in place in that country For Example: Some countries may be more culturally restricted than others, and may not be so willing to expand Gender Equality. Some countries may oppose the effectiveness of a program or policy and call for something stronger Some countries would like the opportunity to create their own policies, and be measured by set international quotas of women professionals in STEM field. One country may have a different approach to Gender Equality than another country – this is where the “various sides in a debate” come in.

Opening Statement The Gender and Science Introduction and Steps Packet that I handed out list some questions under Step 4- 1 st Coalition Session These are some basic questions regarding your country and the issue at hand that should be mentioned in your country’s opening speech As a delegate, you should also be listening for other countries with similar positions to form caucus blocs with ALSO, make sure you have your Country Position Paper or Notes handy (look at Checklist I emailed you) to use throughout debate and your opening speech. Many will be checked off already just by answering the 5 main questions in the Gender and Science Intro and Steps packet.

Questions for Your Caucus Have position paper handy, notes on other nations, and keep in mind the “various sides or positions in the debate.” What anti-discrimination laws and programs exist in your country? How does your country partner with the private sector to promote gender equality in employment? Does your nation have any reservations about women coming into the workplace, particularly with them working side by side with men? How does your nation propose that these be reconciled? How can the UN combat social and cultural factors that deter young women from seeking education in the sciences? How does your nation ensure that women take an active role in shaping the field through leadership and high-level research positions?

After the Caucus Bloc…Present Position Again! How a group of nations wants to handle the promotion and action of Gender Equality in STEM Research What you’ll be presenting after the caucus bloc meeting: As a group of nations, these are some of the ways and reasons we want to: -Reverse the exclusion of women in STEM fields -make gender equality become a central tenant of STEM Research in some of the most important developing markets in the world today -Eliminate the gender gap -Create unlimited access to education -Remember, you can ask questions about what is presented, counteract their reasons, you can highlight the discrepancies in their statement/solutions, etc, but you must first raise your placard (nation card) and be called on by the Chairperson moderating the debate.

Resolution Time After hearing both bloc’s position, make a resolution paper with your caucus about the actions you will put in place on behalf of the UNESCO Committee and UN, for the purpose of Gender Equality, specifically Gender Equality’s role in the most important developing markets in the world. Keep in mind the debates past discussions and points. You will be timed. Remember Preambulatory Clauses and Operative Clauses!!!!!!

Present Your World Changing Resolutions Simply present your one page draft resolution- manner in which this is done may either be shortened or read exactly as written. ***Clarification needed. All delegates in the room can ask questions about the resolution presented.

Gather Support through blocs!
