Do Now How do you feel when your parents come into your room and take something of yours without permission? How does our government get money?

War is Over  King George III issued the Proclamation Act of 1763  British also kept 10,000 troops to enforce the Proclamation Act

Britain Needs Money  Great Britain needed more revenue to fund their troops in the colonies  Britain also has MASSIVE debt from the war  King and Parliament thought the colonists should pay their fair share for the war  Government started to collect new taxes and get stricter on old taxes  Colonists started smuggling their goods

British Government  Parliament - makes laws that govern the entire empire, it is made up by states of the British Empire (but not colonies)  King - enforces the laws made by Parliament

Tougher Laws  George Grenville becomes Prime Minister of Great Britain  Received power from Parliament that tried smuggler under royal judges instead of colonial judges  Why does this matter?  Parliament also gave Writs of Assistance  Let royal customs officers search almost anywhere for smuggled goods

Sugar Act  Sugar Act - 1764 - lowered the tax on molasses  Grenville hoped a lower tax would mean less smuggling  Also let officers take goods from accused smugglers without going to court - Sugar Act angered colonists - Colonists believe the act violated their rights as British citizens

Stamp Act  Stamp Act (1765) - Taxed all printed materials  Patrick Henry got the Virginia House of Burgesses to pass a resolution saying only colonial governments can tax colonial citizens  Sons of Liberty were formed in Boston and led by Sam Adams  They burned effigies that looked like tax collectors  9 colonies met in October 1765 at the Stamp Act Congress and told the British Government that only colonial governments can tax colonies  Colonists started to boycott British goods in protest to the Stamp Act  March 1766 the Stamp Act was repealed  Parliament also passed the Declaratory Act saying they can tax anyone in the colonies

Do Now  What do you know about 9/11?

Townshend Acts (1767)  British now knew the colonists would oppose new taxes on colonial goods  Townshend Acts taxes imported goods instead  Items like glass, tea, and paper were taxed  Colonists were still furious  Even women colonists protested by boycotting British goods  Instead only wear things made in the colonies  Called themselves the Daughters of Liberty

Ticket Out The Door  Why did colonists oppose taxes from the British Government?  Did the colonists want to rebel from Britain or just oppose the new taxes?  In your own opinion, do you think the British could have found another way to get the colonists to pay taxes? How so?
