Missouri Compromise

Election of 1824 First election that no candidate was a leader during th Revolution John C. Calhoun - S.C. Henry Clay - Kentucky Andrew Jackson - Tennessee John Quincy Adams – Mass.

John C. Calhoun Was an outspoken leader from the South that had been in politics for more than 40 years Cared deeply about southern interests, but also wanted to keep the country together

Calhoun Calhoun withdrew from the race and decided to run for Vice President He thought he had a better chance to win

Andrew Jackson Was a man of the people Was a very colorful person His opponents saw him as uneducated and ill tempered (how many Presidents have been military heros)

Corrupt Bargain Jackson won the Popular vote No candidate received enough Electoral votes so it was turned over to the House of Representatives

More corruption Henry Clay persuades Kentucky to give their votes to Adams So he wins Days later Adams named Clay his Sec. Of State

Election of 1828 This election offered voters more choice There were candidates of sharply differing views More than twice the people voted in 28 than did in 24 Andrew Jackson won in a land slide

Andrew Jackson 7th President Was taken prisoner by the British at 14 He was seen as courageous, tough, and stubborn His support came from new, less wealthy voters (see pg. 250)

Andrew Jackson Patronage Giving jobs to supporters and friends Spoils System Jackson gave so many people jobs patronage becomes known as this

Spoils System Jackson replaced about 20% of the federal workers during his eight years This was more than any other President He said any intelligent person can be a competent public official, and this would keep a small wealthy group from controlling the gov’t

Limited Gov’t Shared the belief of many Americans that feared the power of the federal gov’t He attacked politicians he thought were corrupt and laws he thought limited people’s liberty He used his veto more than the previous 6 Presidents

Limited Government When given the proposal that there should be a federal road in Kentucky he vetoed it saying the State should pay for it.
