2 Key Terms What is Stress? –The body’s & mind’s response to a demand. What is a Stressor? –Any situation that puts a demand on the body or mind. What is Epinephrine? –One of the hormones that are released by the body in times of stress. What is Eustress? –A positive stress that energizes a person & helps the person reach a goal. What is Distress? –A negative stress that can make a person sick or can keep a person from reaching a goal.

3 What Are The Five Different Types Of Stressors? Environmental Biological Thinking Behavioral Life Change

4 What Are Environmental Stressors? Conditions or events that cause you stress. – Pollution, poverty, crowding, noise, & natural disasters. What Are Biological Stressors? Conditions that make it difficult for your body to take part in daily activities. – An illness, disability or injury. What are Thinking Stressors? Any type of mental challenge – Taking a test.

5 What are Behavioral Stressors? Unhealthy behavior – Not getting enough sleep or exercise, using tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. What are Life Change Stressors? Any major life change – Death of a loved one, getting married, having a child, & other personal events

6 T he fight-or-flight response. Your body provides you with energy, reflexes, & the strength you may need to respond to the stressor. Flight - the response is to move away. Fight - the response is to confront the situation. Your body releases epinephrine (adrenaline) which prepares the body for quick action. What Is The Physical Response To Stress?

7 What is Positive Stress? Eustress Stress that motivates you to do your best. Energizes you & helps you reach a goal. Makes you feel alert & lively. You appear confident, focused, motivated, energized, & in control.

8 What is Negative Stress? Distress Can make a person sick or keep a person from reaching a goal.

9 What Are The Emotional Responses To Stress? EUSTRESS (Positive) Alert Focused Motivated Energized Confident DISTRESS (Negative) Nervous Forgetful Frightened Confused Unsure

10 How Can You Make Stress Positive? Be optimistic about dealing with a stressor. Do what you can to build your confidence. If you set your mind to it & prepare to meet the challenge, you will find yourself approaching situations in a positive way.

11 What Is The General Adaptation Syndrome? It is the relationship between stress & disease. What Are The Three Stages Of The General Adaptation Syndrome? 1. Alarm Stage: The body & mind become alert, the fight-or-flight response. 2. Resistance Stage: Your body becomes more resistant to disease & injury than normal. You can cope with added stress for a limited time. 3. Exhaustion Stage: You become seriously exhausted. Organs, such as your heart, may suffer & your immune system can no longer fight illness
