Information Processing

Exam Question Give examples of how you might apply schema theory when teaching or coaching a sport specific movement skill. [3]

Answers 1 Vary your practices / experiences in training / develop parameters 2 Highlight what can be transferred effectively to the game situation 3 To make performer aware of environmental conditions / initial conditions in training / during the game 4 To reinforce good practice / give praise when things go right / to reinforce knowledge of response specifications / give effective coaching points 5 Make performer aware of sensory consequences / get the feeling of the correct movement / kinaesthesis 6 Give results of activities / make aware of response / movement outcomes / give knowledge of results KR

Basic Model Input Sense organs Perceptual mechanism Effector Mechanism Decision Making Muscular System Response Intrinsic Feedback Extrinsic Feedback From the environment Info picked up by the eyes, ears, etc. Relevant info is selected and interpreted. Memory is also used here. A motor plan is formed for movement to take place Decisions are put into action. Impulses are sent to muscles Movement occurs

Practical Task (items on a teatray)

Memory Short Term Sensory Store Short Term Memory Long Term Memory Input of stimulus from sensory receptors Selective Attention Encoding

Short Term Sensory Store Has a large capacity Information is stored for between 0.25 and 1 sec. Information is then filtered This filtering is known as selective attention

Selective Attention Relevant information is filtered through to the STM Irrelevant information is lost/forgotten This process is particularly important in sport where quick reactions depend on being able to concentrate on important information and to shut out distractions. Think of a sporting example where selective attention is particularly important

Short Term Memory Known as the ´working memory´ This is where the information is used to decide what needs to be done Stores only a limited amount of information (about 7 pieces) Held for a short period of time (about 30secs)

Short Term Memory Information can be held in the short term memory by chunking information Chunking is grouping together pieces of information to remember them as one piece (e.g. remembering the whole drill for a rugby line out instead of each individual move for each player) If information is important enough, it is rehearsed and then passed to the LTM (Encoding) If it is not important or rehearsed, it is lost.

Long Term Memory Has almost limitless capacity Holds information for long periods of time Motor programmes are stored here Continual rehearsing allows information to stay in the LTM and movements to become automatic. Learning by rehearsal is referred to as ´overlearning´. If we want to use information we first retreive it and then it gets passed to the STM.

Practical Task (cards - pairs)

At the beginning of the lesson there were 10 words on the board. How many can you remember?
