4 Visit to the white house: On October 17 th, 1901 Washington became the first black man to have dinner at the White House thanks to President Teddy Roosevelt

5 Atlanta Compromise “I beg of you to remember that wherever our life touches yours, we help or hinder. Wherever your life touches ours, you make us stronger or weaker. No member of your race in any part of our country can harm the meanest member of mine, without the proudest and bluest blood in Massachusetts being degraded”

6 Tuskegee Institute Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute On July 4 th, 1881.

7 Up From Slavery: An Autobiography The book he wrote is his life story of how he worked with the system to over come the obstacles with out pointing fingers at anybody that its their fault. He pulled himself up and proved to people that it was possible to over come racism. Still used at the institution as a class room book.

8 Monument: There is a national monument dedicated to him in Virginia Multiple statues are placed all over the country
