2 Is part of the new public health approach and is based on the social model of health Influences the way public health programs are planned and delivered Is a framework for health promotion Identified the basic necessities or prerequisites for health – peace, shelter, education, food, income, stable ecosystem, sustainable resources, social justice and equality

3 Building Healthy Public Policy Laws, rules, regulations enforced by governments that lead to improvements in health Some policies are designed to make it more difficult for people to participate in unhealthy behaviours Others aim to influence/change behaviour

4 Examples Smoke free work places Reduced taxes on low alcohol beer, sun hats as part of the School uniform Alcohol tax Compulsory wearing of seat belts while driving ???

5 Create Supportive Environments A supportive environment is one that promotes health and assists people in making healthy lifestyle choices Improving health by taking care of one another and our environment It aims to create a healthy physical and social environment where people have the access/means to engage in healthy behaviours

6 Examples Worksafe initiatives Quitline – offers support to smokers trying to quit (supportive social environment) Shade areas in school playgrounds – supportive physical environment Recycling programs

7 Strengthen Community Action Communities working together to promote health It involves building links between individuals and their community Designed to give community a sense of ownership over health promotion programs (why?)

9 Develop Personal Skills Providing opportunities for people to develop knowledge and skills that give them greater control over their health

11 Re-Orient Health Services Moving away from the focus on curative services to focus on preventative health promotion Avoids the biomedical model of health as it focusses on creating healthy behaviours in the aim that it will prevent health issues from occuring
