Matter:

Properties of Matter: What is Matter? Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. Can you give an example of matter??

Mass: How do you define mass? – The amount of matter an object has. Which has a greater mass, a tennis ball or bowling ball? Which has more matter?

Mass vs. Weight Is your mass the same on moon as it is on the Earth? Is your weight the same on moon as it is on the Earth? – What is the difference between mass and weight?

Substance: Matter must have uniform composition Matter must have definite composition All samples of a substance must have identical physical properties Pure substances contain only one type of matter

Physical Properties A condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing a substances chemical composition.

Physical Properties What are some words that indicate physical properties? Solubility, density, melting point, boiling point, color, odor

What are the three states of matter? Solid Liquid Gas

Solids: Matter that has definite shape and volume Expand slightly Incompressible

Liquids: Fixed volume Takes shape of their container Can flow Incompressible Expand when heated

Gas: Takes shape and volume of its container Easily compressed Flow Particles are spaced far apart

Can you tell the difference?

How would you describe the state of this …?

Vapor: Gas of a substance that is a liquid at room temperature Example: steam(water vapor)- liquid (water) at room temperature

Plasma Another state of matter Can be created by heating a gass Made up of positively and negatively charged particles Neon lights, welding arcs, lighting, stars

Physical Change: Changing of a substance with out altering its composition

Words that describe physical change: Cutting, grinding, bending, melting, freezing, boiling, dissolving

Mixtures: A physical blend of two or more substances

Types of mixtures: 1)Heterogeneous mixtures: – Mixtures that are not uniform in composition – Example: salad 2)homogeneous mixtures: – Mixtures that are uniform in composition – Salt water, milk

Solutions: Solutions are homogeneous mixtures May be solids, liquids or gases

Phase: Any part of a system with uniform composition Heterogeneous mixtures have two or more phases Homogeneous mixtures have one phase

Separation of mixtures: Some substances can be separated by physical methods Distillation Evaporation Density Magnetism

Heterogeneous or Homogeneous: 1. Salad 2. soda 3. milk 4. Trail mix 5. Orange juice with pulp 6. Salt water
