8 8 Who came? o Pilgrims and Puritans seeking religious freedom o Merchants, lords and nobles looking to get richer o Indentured servants and families looking for a better life 8

9 9 Big Idea #4 English settled on three areas of eastern North America

10 The 13 Colonies o By the early 1700’s, three distinct parts of the colonies had developed. o The Northern colonies - small villages and towns, small farms, port cities. They had long winters and rocky soil. o Middle Colonies - Port cities, artisans and merchants. Shorter winters with Fertile soil so farming was good. o Southern Colonies - Warm climate with good soil. Large tobacco farms, small farms. o All colonies had slaves. Many more slaves in the Southern colonies.
