4. What I wanted students to learn:  To complete a “close read” a painting  To see a correlation between a story, a piece of art, and life  To appreciate American art

5. A few major learning activities:  Teacher reads Going North by Janice Harrington  Students participate in a discussion of the book  Students do a close read of Train Station by Walter W. Ellison  Students make connections between the book, the painting, and their own lives  Students respond to the experience by drawing a picture
