Lesson Overview  Grade Level: 2 nd grade  Content Areas Integrated: Art, Literacy, and Social Studies  The students will learn about Native Americans and their culture. This will include art, lifestyles, and values. The students will create their own Native American visual story to communicate an idea without words. They will then write a more detailed version of the actual story on the back of their artwork.

Key Concepts  1. Visual Art: Know how to analyze the connections between Native American culture and their artwork.  2. Literacy: Know how to communicate similar ideas as Native Americans by using correct language and concepts.  3. Social Studies: Know the basic values of Native Americans and how they communicated these through their art works and ways of living.

Essential Questions  What are the core values in Native American culture?  What are the parts that need to be included in a story?  How can art work tell a story?

Lesson Objectives  1. Visual Art: The students will be able to explain American Indian art work by creating a version of their own artwork using Native American skills.  2. Literacy: The students will be able to provide details about the topics portrayed in their artwork as well as the works of American Indians. They will use precise language that relates to the topic.  3. Social Studies: The students will be able to understand the diverse lifestyles of Native Americans by analyzing their artwork, reading books about their lives, and creating their own artwork to communicate similar ideas.

Anticipatory Set  Have the students use VTS to analyze a piece of Pop Chalee’s work. Allow them to discuss the actions they can see in the art. This will open up their imagination and get them accustomed to analyzing the storyline behind Native American art. I think the open discussion will allow them to see how many different stories can arise from simply looking at a picture.

Summative Assessment Strategy  The art project and written story will serve as the summative assessment portion of this lesson. The finished project will show their understanding of Native American art and values. They will present their projects to the class to prove their understandings of what they have learned in the lesson.
