2 CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE What is CVD? A disease that affects the heart and blood vessels. What are the two types of CVD? Hypertension and Atherosclerosis What is Hypertension? High blood pressure; damage to blood vessels and heart over time; most common in ages 35+. Prevent through healthy eating, managing weight, and regular exercise. What is Atherosclerosis? A disease where there is an accumulation of plaque on artery walls; causes hardening and increased chance of stroke, heart attack. Caused by high saturated fats, cholesterol. Behavioral Factors? Smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity, alcohol abuse, obesity, poor stress managements. Environmental Factors? Stressful workplace

3 CANCER What is Cancer? The uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells. What is a Tumor? An abnormal mass of tissue with no natural role in the body; not always cancerous. Benign (non) grows slowly without spreading. Malignant (cancerous) that spreads to other organs and parts of the body. What is Skin Cancer? Also known as Carcinoma; a change on the skin, sore that won’t heal. Detected through physical exam and removed with biopsy. What is Lung Cancer? Type of Carcinoma; severe cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, blood, etc. that develops over time; detected through X-ray Behavioral Factors? Exposure to sun/radiation, failure to use proper “protection”, tanning beds, etc. Environmental Factors? Depletion of Ozone layer, lack of shade, time of day, occupation Behavior Factors? Smoking, general air pollution Environmental Factors? Exposure to radon, asbestos

4 OSTEOPOROSIS What is it? A condition in which there is a progressive loss of bone tissue. How can it be prevented/detected? Bone tissue loss is a natural part of aging, but healthful behaviors can reduce risk of development later in life. Behavior Factors? Lack of physical activity (especially weight training or bearing); lack of calcium and vitamin D in diet Environment Factors? None identified.

6 BRONCHITIS What is it? An inflammation caused by infection or exposure to irritants; excess mucus is produced, blocking airways and creating coughing/wheezing/shortness of breath How is it treated? Antibiotics and reducing the exposure. Behavior Factors? Smoking, choice of occupation Environment Factors? General air pollution, asbestos, secondhand smoke

8 EMPHYSEMA What is it? A disease that progressively destroys the walls of the alveoli; almost always caused by smoking. What are some Symptoms? Breathing difficulty, chronic cough Behavior Factors? Smoking, choice of occupation Environment Factors? General pollution, asbestos, secondhand smoke
