Accommodating Mac Students in the Intro Course With your host Kyle Gower-Winter

Introduction  Does anyone currently use a Mac in the classroom?  Have you noticed an increase in Mac use in your courses?  Wondering if there really is that big of a difference, and worried you won’t be able to help/accommodate Mac users in your class?  Thinking about making the switch and using a Mac for your next course?  Does anyone’s classroom look like this?

Why Accommodate Mac Students?  40% of college students say their next computer will be a Mac – Morgan Stanley (March, 2008)  43% of college students planning to buy a laptop in the next 12 months will buy a Mac – Student Monitor (August, 2008)  Apple ranked second most popluar brand by college students – Anderson Analytics (December, 2008)

× Office 2007 vs. Office 2008  Both suites include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but Office 2008 does not include Access.  Office 2008 is a lot less ornate, with less styles, themes, Clip Art, and icons.  Office 2008 has less frills like Live Preview, the Mini Toolbar, and the Quick Access Toolbar.

Office: Similarities Demo

Office: Differences Demo

Word 2007 vs. Word 2008 Demo

Excel 2007 vs. Excel 2008 Demo

PowerPoint 2007 vs. PowerPoint 2008 Demo

Classroom Concerns  What if all my assignments are in Office 2007?  Which textbooks should you use?  How will I grade assignments completed in Office 2008?  What if I am not familiar with Macs?  The business world is made up of PCs, shouldn’t we insist our students use Office 2007?  What if I teach Access in my class?

How iLife ‘08 can Compliment Office 2008  iPhoto  PowerPoint slides can be exported to iPhoto  iWeb  Web sites can be easily created for hosting documents  iMovie  PowerPoint slides, photos, and videos can be turned into a beautifully formatted movie  iDVD  Movies can be given menus and chapters and burned to DVD for play pack in any common DVD player  GarageBand  Add soundtracks to your movies or create a podcast to compliment your project

Conclusions  Social Experiment!  Macs are more popular than ever – we can’t ignore them.  Office 2007 and Office 2008 are fundamentality the same.  Each Office application differs slightly, and offers different advantages, but virtually identical results can be achieved with each.  Preference comes down to personal choice.  iLife ’08 and ’09 compliment Office 2008 for the Mac nicely.  Worst-Case-Senario: Macs can run Windows  Bottomline - the Mac student can be easily accommodated in the intro course.
